Learn Wine With These Wine Tasting Tips

Have you ever been to a wine tasting to learn about wine?  We have all been to an informal party, or a holiday resort,  where the purpose was to get drunk as opposed to appreciating the taste of wine. If you go to a wine tasting society with a chief intent to learn wine you need or want some handy hints to get the most out of it.

If you want to learn wine, you should learn about wine tasting, first thing is to grab yourself a bottle of wine – preferably white wine and follow some simple steps to learn about tasting wine correctly.

Step 1 to learn wine tasting : pour out the wine

When you first pour out the wine, you should look at it.  You should be able to see if it clear, or cloudy.  Some drinks are meant to be cloudy, so it is not unusual.

Step 2 to learn wine tasting: swirl the wine around

When you swirl the wine around the glass, the wine will get into contact with the air, and oxygenate, bringing the flavor and the aromas forward.

Step 3 to learn wine tasting: Smell the wine

When you smell the wine you are looking out for a wine that might smell musty or off, that has been left out too long – but you are also smelling to get the impression of the taste of the wine.  Our taste buds are not that sensitive compared to our sense of smell.  When you smell a wine you can smell the citrus, or grassy ‘taste’ of the wine – something that our taste buds would not be able to pick up.

Step 4 to learn wine tasting: Taste the wine

When you taste the wine, you don’t want to gulp it down.  You should swirl the wine around in your mouth so that your teeth, the back of your mouth, the inside of your cheeks all come into contact with the wine.  This ensures that all the flavors are released and you are able to appreciate it.  You the wine in your mouth and suck air in to bubble through the wine to decant it in your mouth.

Step 5 to learn wine tasting: Spit out the wine

Yes, it seems like waste, but if you have several bottles of wine to taste, and you don’t want to end up with a headache the next morning you should pace yourself!

Step 6 to learn wine tasting: Rinse

You should also rinse out your mouth and be sure that your palate is clean, so that you may try a new wine and be able to judge its merits.
